A lot of people are surprised when I tell them face painting works just as well for adult events as it does for kids' parties. The Wild Side evening at Mamasamba Restaurant in Rosebank is a good example of why.
A jungle-themed evening for adults
The brief was a sophisticated jungle — floral, glittery, vibrant, but still elegant enough that guests could keep the look on through the evening. Restaurant events have a particular pace: guests arrive, they wander, they sit, they socialise. The face painting needs to be quick enough that the queue moves but detailed enough that what each guest walks away with feels worth the wait.
Designs matched to what guests were wearing
The detail I find adult clients enjoy most is matching the design to the outfit. Picking up the gold in a dress, the deep green in a jacket, the floral pattern on a top — and pulling those colours through into the face design. It ties the look together and gives the guest something that feels made for them, not stamped off a sheet.
What this kind of event needs from the painter
A few things change when the audience is adults.
A queue of adults waits differently. They are happy to chat, they want to see what is being painted, they have opinions about colour. The energy is conversational, not chaotic. The designs are smaller, more delicate, often around one side of the face or the eye area — wearable art, not a full mask.
Glitter and metallic tones photograph well in restaurant lighting. Most adults at these events end up with at least one phone photo of their finished look, which spreads the design beyond the room.
